Yolanda de Man was a graduate student in the Art History Department at Tel Aviv University, under the supervision of Dr. Tamar Cholcman (2014-2017). Focusing on the study of emblems in the Renaissance, Yolanda received her MA degree with honors. In June 2017 Yolanda passed away suddenly, leaving behind her parents, sister, fiancé, friends and colleagues.

Yolanda’s research focused on the connection between Early Modern Natural Science and Emblematics through the investigation of Jacob and Joris Hoefnagel’s Archetypa studiaque patris Georgii Hoegnagelii (1592). In accordance with Yolanda’s research, it was decided to honor her memory by organizing a graduate and young scholar’s conference that would encompass her interests, namely the interconnections and relations between Art and Science.  Hence, the idea of exploring the role and function of art and artists in the Republic of Letters. This initiative was furthered by a graduate seminar under Dr. Cholcman, where her peers and friends, worked together to actualize the conference’s concept.

Yolanda’s professors, colleagues, friends and family have lost a brilliant young woman, who, undoubtedly, would have had a promising academic future ahead of her. It is for this reason that this conference centralizes on giving graduate students and young scholars the opportunity to present their work in an international conference of the highest standards. By this we chose to honor the memory of Yolanda and the highest of standards on which she stood.
